Explanation Regarding Supporters in the U.S. House

See below for the list of "Single-Payer Supporters in the U.S. House", sorted by State and U.S. Congressional District.

We report the members of the U.S. Congress who are supporters and count the voting members; delegates are not voting members.

The list at the Thomas Register is sometimes different than the actual set of single-payer supporters listed below for the following reasons:

— The Library of Congress list is not always updated when a Representative is no longer a supporter, such as when one of them dies or resigns.

— The Library of Congress list is normally NOT accurate during the entire first year of any two-year Congress. Some U.S. Representatives who are supporters do not "re-sign" as a cosponsor until 6 to 12 months or more into a session of Congress.

— The following U.S. Representatives and their staffs are focusing on the Affordable Care Act of 2010 to the point of not re-signing as a cosponsor of H.R. 676. However, these Representatives are still of the opinion that the best solution is single-payer health care, improved Medicare for All, as confirmed by e-mail communications of May 2012:
Jared Polis (CO-2)
Mazie Hirono (HI-2)
Marcy Kaptur (OH-9)
Ben Ray Lujan (NM-3)
Multiple requests for their status were submitted to the following U.S. Representatives between mid-December 2011 and the end of May 2012:
Sanford Bishop, Jr. (GA-2); Dave Loebsack (IA-2); John F. Tierney (MA-6)
Nydia Velazquez (NY-12); Robert Brady (PA-1); Nick Rahall (WV-3)

Communications

To Citizens:
If you reside in a U.S. Congressional District of a supporter, please note that we still send that U.S. Representative monthly letters. If you know that they not only support Medicare for All, but they also promote its support to other members of Congress and to citizens, then write "Thanks for your continued support." as your hand-written addition each month. This is very important. Supporters need to know that you are behind their position.. When I visited the offices of supporters in 2007 I was told that they very much appreciate thank-you notes -- Bob.

To U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators who support Medicare for All
— Please submit your support or simply contact us to discuss your support. -- Bob

For Your Information

Starting in 2011 we record the actual list of supporters, independent of whether a specific U.S. Representative is on the Library of Congress' list of cosponsors. The Library of Congress does not always have an accurate list. For example, the list of cosponsors is not updated when a Representative is no longer a supporter, such as when one of them dies or resigns.

The situation of counting the number of single-payer supporters was made complicated by the Affordable Care Act of 2010. Some strong single-payer supporters in the U.S. House decided to focus their efforts on the Affordable Care Act to the point of not re-signing as a cosponsor of H.R. 676.

Explanation About the List of Cosponsors
that is maintained by the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress supposedly maintains the current list of U.S. Representatives who are cosponsors of U.S. House Resolution 676. H.R. 676 is the proposed U.S. legislation for national single-payer health care, Improved Medicare for All. See the Library of Congress index for H.R.676; then select “Printer Friendly Display”

However, the U.S. Congress has never instructed the Library of Congress to update any documentation when someone dies or resigns. Therefore, it is important to use the web page you are now viewing (the lists above) to know the number of supporters, instead of the Library of Congress web page.

Number of Cosponsors at the end of the 110th session of the U.S. Congress (2007-2008): 87

Number of Cosponsors at the end of the 111th session of the U.S. Congress (2009-2010): 82
