Maternal mortality is the number of deaths of women during pregnancy, childbirth or in the 42 days after delivery.

The MMR data was obtained from the reporting of the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IMHE) - data for 2008.

Maternal mortality may be a much better indicator of health care performance than infant mortality, especially considering the debate about how infant mortality rates are determined across different countries.
