Improved Medicare for All, no longer privatized
Economic Studies
Result: Health Care for All
- A United States General Accounting Office report in 1991 provided this conclusion: “If the
Canadian system’s key features–universal coverage, a single payer, and systemwide spending
controls–were applied in the United States, the savings in administrative costs alone would
be more than enough to finance insurance coverage for the millions of Americans who are uninsured.”
The 10 page report is “Canadian Health Insurance: Lessons for the United States.” Report T-HRD-91-35 is
available from the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Do a search for it or go directly to the archived report
- Confirmation of the U.S. GAO conclusions has occurred numerous times since 1991. Read on …
- A summary of national and state studies is available that provides this introduction:
- “The financial viability of a single-payer system has been analyzed time and again by researchers both
from the U.S. government and independent consulting firms. Each time the conclusion is the same:
single-payer saves enough on wasteful paperwork to provide high quality health coverage to all and
contain future health spending. This paper catalogs the analyses of proposed single-payer systems at
both the federal and state levels.”
- There is so much money that could be available from the unnecessary degree of bureaucracy that we might save money nationally, according to most of the studies at this reference. The results of these studies seem pretty logical when you think that our nation spends FAR more than other nations on a PER person basis for our entire population.
- Whether we save money or “break even” as a nation, the results for our quality of life are excellent due to the overall benefits
- Projected results for one state: Colorado. If Colorado alone implemented single-payer, everyone would be insured automatically without question, and there would be over a billion saved each year!
